Understanding Society User Support: New edition of the British Household Panel Survey

Added by Stephanie Auty 6 months ago

This dataset is for researchers who wish to use BHPS on its own. Researchers wanting to use BHPS and Understanding Society should use the Understanding Society datasets, which include a harmonised version of BHPS.

Starting in 1991, the BHPS ran until 2009 collecting 18 years of household panel data. The survey was designed as a nationally representative sample of more than 5,000 households. Additional samples of 1,500 households in both Scotland and Wales were added to the main sample in 1999, and in 2001 2,000 households were added in Northern Ireland, making the panel suitable for UK-wide research. The BHPS ended in 2009, when Understanding Society started. Participants from BHPS were asked if they would like to join Understanding Society and over 6,000 of them did so. You can see how the two surveys link in the survey timeline.

The new edition of BHPS released today incorporates a number of enhancements to the data for BHPS Waves 1-18. Net income variables have been added to the main dataset and additional variables have been included to assist linkage to the Understanding Society dataset. More details on the changes to the dataset can be found in Appendix 4 of the BHPS User Guide.

In this edition there is also now a separation between a standard End User Licence release and a Special Licence release. The End User Licence has some limits on the range of more disclosive variables available. Researchers who require variables held under Special Licence conditions will need to apply for access via the UK Data Service.

The new edition of BHPS is available from the UK Data Service:

SN 5151 - British Household Panel Survey: Waves 1-18, 1991-2009

SN 6340 - British Household Panel Survey, Waves 1-18, 1991-2009: Secure Access, National Grid Reference

SN 8380 - British Household Panel Survey: Waves 1-18, 1991-2009: Special Licence Access
